I am an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, AL. I am using the internet more and my patients are too. Nearly 85% of patients turn to the internet for information and it is growing every day. These patients are informed and empowered. This is good for all of us in healthcare. My philosophy has been to educate my patients so that we can work together to make the best decision about treating their orthopedic conditions whether surgically or non-surgically. While this has traditionally been done in my clinic, one on one, healthcare is changing and there are newer ways to have these conversations.
This is why I am launching a new website to help you the patients with a reliable resource for evidence based medical decisions. If my patients are there then I should be too. So much of the digital information is commercial and without evidence, it must be confusing to you the patients. We are all looking for value. I think physicians need to be the voice of this information whether in a clinic, one on one, or in the digital realm. Physicians have the unique training and skills to distill the complex information about your health and put it into the context of your solution.
Healthcare is Social
Knowledge grows more today through social interactions, and healthcare is social! What do we do when we are injured or afraid about our health; we ask a family member, friend, or coworker what their experience has been and who to see. By harnessing the power of social media I hope to become a part of that social interaction available for those who want to be well informed.
My new Facebook page will have regular post about common orthopedic conditions and treatments that may be relevant to you or someone you know. I hope that by creating a location online where people can feel comfortable with evidence based orthopedic perspectives that the confusion of medical information will be simplified. Like my page!
Instead of sitting on the sidelines of the social conversations about healthcare I also plan to be in the stream. I will be on Twitter, joining the conversation and amplifying the message about value based orthopedic information. Follow me!
My hope is that being present in the digital and social media healthcare arena will improve my ability to continue my practice style of educating patients so we can work together on their individual medical or surgical solution. I want you to participate in your care! My online presence will be a journey for me and my patients. Join me! I will need your help and feedback. Please let me know how I can change and grow my site to help you the patient.
